My internet connection is uploading at an AMazing speed of 0.8KB/s. For reference, typical speeds on a 28.8 modem connection are around 3.0 to 3.5. Response times (even to fast sites like Google are in the 2-3 minute range. Under ordinary circumstances, I'd call my internet service provider to fuss at them and threaten to switch companies if they didn't get things fixed.
But my internet connection is part of my housing package. "Free High-Speed Internet". Its part of a package that includes things like a bed and a roof over my head, so they don't really take you seriously when you threaten to leave. This is not a rare problem. The internet slows down to "unusable" for hours at a time every couple of days.
And the internet isn't half the problem. The water pressure has been screwed up for a week now. We lost all water service for an entire day a few days ago. The mail service is unreliable and slow. And, as with the internet, we have no consumer leverage because technically these are all services that come "free" with the housing package.
So I'm saying this here and now, to anybody that is considering living on cAMpus at UNM. This entry will now show up on Google when people search for UNM and "CAMpus housing," "dorms," "on cAMpus" or "internet". Hopefully some prospective residents will read this:
If you want reliable water service, don't live in the University of New Mexico dorms. If you want remotely reliable internet access, don't count on the University of New Mexico to provide it. If you want to count on receiving mail in a reasonably timely manner, don't consider cAMpus housing. If you want any influence at all over your own living arrangement, than you should not, under any circumstances, consider staying on cAMpus at the University of New Mexico.
